Safety by choice

NOT by chance

Introduction

Self-defence is one of the most important life skills in the 21st Century. Keeping its importance in mind and as a practising paediatrician at Vasai in Palghar district, I Dr. Mrs. Jayashree Deshpande wanted to create awareness and teach techniques to mainly teenage girls in schools, medical fields etc.

Aim

The primary aim of this Self Defence Training is to escape without injury in an untoward incident.

Knife threat

Aggressor gives a knife threat for kidnapping or theft the measures are ;

Engage the person in a dialogue by negotiating with money or perks.

Take the right moment when the aggressor is engaged with you in a conversation.

Use your both hands to defense, hit one hand with palm heel on his backfist arm on which he is holding the knife and other hand will be used to hit with palm heel on the attacker wrist to disengage his knife from the hand.

Double Collar Grab

Technique 2 - Place your thumbs firmly on the aggressor's eyes and apply pressure. Squeeze as hard as possible to impair their vision and force them.

Double Collar Grab

Technique 1 - When grabbed, use your hands to scratch and claw at your attacker’s face, aiming to inflict intense pain and disorient them.

Hand grab with both hands

If a hand is grabbed with both the hands and are being pulled.

Use your other hand by taking it to the hand which is grabbed by the attacker, lock the fingers of both the hands.

Pull the grabbed hands from the thumb placed of the attacker with a quick jerk.

Hands trapped from behind

  • Quickly jerk back and try to hit the attacker with the back of your head.
  • Now quickly bend down, grab his leg.
  • Get up pulling it with you.

Hair grab from behind

Grabbing hair from behind is painful, take control from the hands of the attacker by grabbing hands of the attacker.

With the tight grip over the attacker's hand and wrist turnover such that attacker wrist gets twisted.

Plant your leg on the attacker knee joint and push it down inflicting pain on the attacker's wrist and shoulder and thereby releasing the hair.

Neck choke from Shawl/Wire

As the attacker takes the chance to grab the shawl and choke from behind, take hold of the choke with both hands.

Bend forward and turn your head either clockwise or anti-clockwise under the attackers' hands so that you are facing the attacker.

After turning there is a possibility of choke release.

Attack with a punch/kick and move away from the situation.

Grabbing from behind

If the assaulter grabs your clothes from behind, be careful of clothes being torn.

Turnover under the person’s hand.

Grab the person by placing hand over the neck to shoulder.

Place the leg behind the person dominating leg and pull him backwards and disbalance.

Side shoulder grab

As soon as your attacker reaches for you by laying their hand on the shoulder, take control by grabbing the hand by not letting them get a solid grip on you.

Twist their hand backwards with a push or attack and flee from the place. This proactive move can often deter an attack before it fully develops.

Side headlock

Turn into the attacker’s side as much as possible to avoid being choked.

With your hand that’s furthest away, strike the groin with open-handed slaps/elbow strike from nearest hand until you have enough mobility to turn your head all the way out to disengage.

Bear hug attack

Bend forward from the waist. This shifts your weight forward, making it more difficult for your attacker to pick you up. It also gives you a better angle to throw elbows from side to side to the attacker’s face.

Turn into the attacker with one of your elbows and continue counterattacking.

This should give you space to turn fully, using another move to injure the face or strike the groin. With the space these moves have created, you may be able to escape and run away.

Understanding The Importance Of Self Defence

Spreading the awareness about self defence is more so needed in the rural areas where girls are oppressed under the power of strength

or money and are forced to face sexual violence, threats, abuse, random attacks by strangers, by white collared people or even by their own loved ones and worst they have no vent out for the same. Many of such cases go unreported or unregistered.

So to address this much needed issue of teen/ women attack/violence spreading awareness about the self defence is necessary.

It also teaches discipline and helps in building the confidence.

Self Protection Technique ?

The primary aim of this Self Defence Training is to escape without injury in an untoward incident.

Grabbing Hair

Take control of your head, grab your hair with the hand nearby to the attack.

Take other hand above the attackers attacking hand & clinch the elbow inwards by flexing your defending hand in between attackers elbow and shoulder.

KNEE TAPPING (GROIN ATTACK)

Be Stable as best you can.

Lift your dominant leg off the ground and begin to drive your knee upward.

Extend your dominant leg, drive hips forward, slightly lean back, and kick forcefully on the attacker’s groin area

Defence against leg grab on the ground

Grab the ankles while moving forward. Simultaneously pushthe pelvis forward while pulling the ankles.

Unbalance the attacker, get up and escape.

Shouting Technique

Those who choose to target women (and children) are hoping for a target who can be easily intimidated into silence. They are not looking for a feisty contest.

Your voice comes from your core from deep inside your abdomen, your gut, your center. Use that six-pack by tightening you abdominal muscles as you exhale strongly and YELL directly at that assailant. This works to engage your core and increase adrenaline, both of which add strength.

Face Punch

If one of your arms is down, there is a chance you can hit the opponent in his jaw.

Turn the core muscles and back, thereby swinging the arm, which is bend.

At an angle near or at 90 degrees, in a horizontal arc into the attacker.

Middle Punch

If one of your arms is down, there is a chanceyou can hit the opponent in his chest.

Keep your wrist straight and strong. Keep your fist tightly clenched.

Hit the attacker on the ribs to give a maximum blow.

Defence on the ground (getting up)

Kick to the groin.

Get up by putting the foot (the kicking one)

next to the hand. Other hand in protection & escape.

Hopping & Skipping skills

Hopping helps in to move from your place and gain confidence.

Skipping helps to increase speedy movement.

Skipping rescues oneself from the place of attack.

Skipping avoids injuries.

Neck grab from front single-handed

Hook the opponent’s hand.

Simultaneously finger strike into the eyes.

Direct kick with the shin to the genitals and escape.

Neck Attack

If you can’t grab your opponent’s hand, hit him with a fist or with a finger between the collarbones or into his Adam’s apple. This will allow you to disorient your opponent enough that it will take him a long time to come back to his senses.

Take both hands to the collarbone and place both hands thumb on the Adams apple.

Press it deliberately till the attacker gets in a stress to take his breathe.

Face/Upper Block

This Block is used for attacks coming over the head. Any attack made at the upper part of the body is blocked if timed correctly using this block.

Using the block first keep their fist sideways at the opposite side of the stomach or torso.

Then raise the fist up to their head, deflecting the attack/ defending the attack.

Elbow strike (Back)

An elbow hit is one of the most dangerous hits in all kinds of martial arts. This is exactly the hit you need if you are approached from the side.

Make sure you see the target.

Bring your elbow up and pivot your opposite foot.

Rotating your hips and turning into the target

Making contact with the back part of your elbow on the jaw.

Grabbing Shirt Collar

Use one hand to grab and hold the hand of the attacker to get control.

Use your other hand to push their elbow up while holding their hand in place.

Defence against knife on neck from front

Distract him with negotiating and showing different things or valuables.

Take your dominating hand hold the attacking hand wrist of the attacker and move away from the threat.

Take your other hand over the attacker’s attacking hand by holding your dominant hand forearms.

Groin attack or by rotating your body for a possible hand lock & attack.

Grabbing from the front or Shoulder

Step back on the right leg into a forward stance as you pull the attacker’s hands away from your shoulders as if you were executing a double low block.

Execute a right thrusting front kick to the attacker’s mid-section.

Set your right leg back behind you into a forward stance.

Stick defence attack from the front

Try to go as quickly near the attacker in a dive position and hold a position between the attacking hand and the attacker’s face.

Clutching the attacking hand with one hand so the attacker cannot take control of the situation.

Grab with the other hand on the attacker’s shoulder pull the attacker down and have a knee attack.

Move back with the clutched hand, so with the knee attack blow attacker will lose control of the grip of the stick.

Hands trapped from behind

Quickly jerk back and try to hit the attacker with the back of your head.

Now quickly bend down, and grab his leg. • Get up pulling it with you.

Mount Position

By tucking both feet on the attacker’s waist. by raising one leg bending over the knee and keeping the foot or ankle part on the other leg’s thighs making it a lock.

By crawling the body through the back to get away from the attacker’s pouch.

Hold the shoulders of the attacker by tapping with both palms

With the help of the hold of the shoulder take your body backwards

Kick on the chest or on the face of the attacker.

Neck grab choke from the front

Hook the opponent’s hands downwards with simultaneous knee strikes and escape
